Revealing The Unusual Truth About ‘One Hit Wonders’4 min read

“Who Let The Dogs Out” by the Baha Men, “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls, “I Want Candy” by Bow Wow Wow, “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye… Everybody once hummed these songs when they were current. However, the names behind these hits are long forgotten.”

What Is A “One Hit Wonder”?

A “One Hit Wonder” refers to a song created by artists and musicians whose group ranked at number one on a chart or billboard a maximum of one time and failed to maintain their position. It’s safe to say that creating a hit song is easier than maintaining it.

Looking back at the chart-toppers between 1955 and 2005, the pattern of artists who came in at number one, but failed to uphold their position can be very easily recognized.

How Are There So Many Of Them?

So the main question is what causes the fall of the stars when people were expecting a sequence? Apart from the outcomes of fame and money, what are the reasons lying behind it? “Who Let the Dogs Out?” is a song that many can immediately recognize and sing along to, but the creators of this “one hit wonder” have been long forgotten.

“Baha Men” released this track back in 2000 and it was such a success that they claimed a Grammy for it. They were unable to produce another track to maintain their ranking and were soon misplaced by competing artists.

But what is the reason behind this almost immediate disappearance after a massive success?

Even Wikipedia has dedicated a whole webpage towards artists who fell from a number one ranking and never managed to follow-up.

The Problem With A Lack Of System

The creative process behind writing and producing a hit is a lot harder than we think and some artists take more time than others to find the right inspiration and process that captures a certain vibe.

A song produced by the same artist that failed to meet the standards of their previous “one hit wonder” is known as a “Sophomore Slump”. This term can also be used to describe the performance of athletes, students, films, and series.

When you set the standard this high for yourself, you’re expected to continue to produce material that is of the same level.

This can be an extremely tough task to master, as expectations from fans and listeners are so high, that most artists never end up releasing more material, especially if they don’t have some form of a system in place to help them.

Most artists aren’t prepared for the attention or fame that comes with the sudden successes that a single might have.

This results in them losing the brief window of opportunity and attention one has. If you’re not able to deliver an equally impressive follow-up then there’s no second chance.

The Solution: The Ultimate System For Creatives

Touching on what we just discussed, an additional reason for talent vanishing is the ever-changing tastes and preferences of the public.

Let’s take a quick look at Madonna. In short: Madonna’s success encompasses various avenues in the entertainment space but to still be referred to as “The Queen of Pop” since the 1980’s is quite the achievement in itself.

Predominantly, what kept Madonna so consistently successful as an artist and entrepreneur was her recognizing early on that having the right team is crucial.

All the right consultants and professionals that surrounded her supported her in developing material that was not only in line with pop culture but set a trend right then and there.

BLACK ONE ENTERTAINMENT’s focus is thus on creating the ultimate system and one-stop platform for upcoming artists, creatives, and performers.

For instance, our artists and groups are provided with a structured business plan, a marketing & branding plan, a product plan, a development and training plan and all kinds of creative, business as well as psychological support.

All of this is essential to building a long-lasting and successful career.

Needless to say, we’re only discussing the tip of the iceberg here. To read more about what specifically we do differently than other industry competition, check out the “Exclusive with the Founders [Interview]“.
