Top-Earning Boy Bands – Odd Facts That Blew Our Minds7 min read

Jun 14, 2018 | INDUSTRY INSIGHTS, MUSIC

Pop music is being manufactured and consumed at a rate that has never been experienced before. It is the only genre to see its earnings grow steadily over the past five years, nearly doubling from $402 million USD in 2012 to $800 million USD in 2016.

Collaborations between brands and pop stars are becoming increasingly popular, with a very interesting statistic provided by a source, stating that live music ticket sales’ revenue will still grow from the $7.2 billion USD that it was in 2015 to $9.1 billion USD in 2021.

Let’s take a look at one of the most successful categories within pop-music, boy bands.

The start of their success originated from their self-titled album, as well as their album Millennium, which was released in 1999 and sold more than 1,000,000 copies within the first week of its release.

The Backstreet Boys made a whopping $60 million USD in 2000, making them music’s highest-paid act that year and went on to become one of the best selling boy bands of all time, selling more than 130 million records in their duration as a band.

Formed under YG Entertainment, the Seoul based K-Pop group, BIGBANG, has achieved international success, clocking the biggest year ever for a K-Pop act.

The only boy bands who’ve earned more in a single year are One Direction and Backstreet Boys. The US economic magazine, Forbes, has revealed that BIGBANG earned up to $44 million in 2017.

The Washington Post has also described them as the ‘biggest boy band in the world”.

BTS

Korean act BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeodan, has become one of the most recognised names in the pop industry. Winning the Top Social Artist of the Year has seen the K-Pop group break a 4-year streak set by the one and only Justin Bieber.

Backstreet Boys members Nick, Howie, Kevin, and AJ were discussing the group on a twitter stream not so long ago and expressed their admiration of the group, with Nick saying, “We are huge fans of BTS…”.

The group consists of 7-members and in March, the group’s label, Big Hit Entertainment, revealed that its net profit rose 172.7% from 2017, around $22.9 million USD. Big Hit Entertainment states that this was the highest ever since the company was founded. It’s current net worth stand close to $57 million USD as of today.

Needless to say, BTS has become one of the most recognized boy bands in K-Pop history and by the look of things, they aren’t planning to stop any time soon.
